The Wilson Community Enhancement Charity was established as an organization dedicated to helping kids learn to swim. The beautiful pool complex, that is home to Linnea's Swim School and the Wilson Harbor Pool Club, was an extraordinary gift from Mr. Patrick Brady. Thanks to Pat Brady and his family, people from all over the US and Canada are able to enjoy a First Class Pool Facility at 57 Harbor Street in Wilson, NY.
Mr. Brady built the facility in 2000 and dedicated it to his late sister, Linnea Brady Massey. Linnea and the rest of the Brady children were fortunate enough to take swimming lessons in Wilson, back in the late 70's when the program was offered in local residents' backyard pools. Linnea, herself, contributed back to the Wilson Community swimming program when she went from being a swimming lesson student to being an instructor in the same program years later.
Mr. Brady recognized the importance of a swim program and wanted the children in the community to have the same opportunity that he did as a child. With that mission in mind, the Wilson Community Enhancement Charity (WCEC), a certified 501 (c) 3 public charity, was created and Mr. Brady graciously donated the funds required to build the pool facility to the WCEC.
The summer of 2015 marks the 15th anniversary for Linnea's Swim School - a generous free program available to all the children in the community, and the classes and instructors are all Red Cross Certified.
Since the ribbon cutting of Linnea's Pool in 2000, the WCEC has adopted the Salmon Run 5K Race and created Harbor Hoops, one of WNY's largest and most loved 3 on 3 Basketball Tournaments. The WCEC also provides a family orientated outdoor movie series and concerts in beautiful Clark's Park.
The Board of Directors for the WCEC is currently composed of four dedicated Wilson residents who volunteer their time and efforts to keep the organization funded. The charity exists due to the generosity of it's donors, and doesn't receive monetary assistance from any outside entity. Please consider donating to the WCEC and Linnea's Swim School, an amazing free swim program that has enriched the lives of children for 15 years.
Board of Directors
President - Walter Moxham
Vice President - Marge Clark
Secretary / Treasurer - Kate & Jim Madan
In 2013, four of our long term trustees (directors) retired from our board.
Jamie Moxham had served on the board since the charity’s inception. Jamie was involved and active in all matters of the charity and she served as our treasurer for many years. Jamie oversaw the swim lesson program, as well as all of our events and endeavors. She conceived of and orchestrated the Taste of Summer, one of our most successful fundraising events ever. Her home was often our headquarters, where she graciously hosted meetings, warehoused t-shirts, and set up assembly lines for packing event participants’ goodie bags. Larry Elia served on the board for many years. He contributed greatly overall to the charity, both intellectually and financially. Maryanna Bull was also a long term trustee. Maryanna was very active in all of the charity’s endeavors. She was critical to the success of the “new” Salmon Run 5k, being brought back one year after the Town of Wilson had discontinued the event. She believed in the Salmon Run, and was the event co-coordinator and emcee. And last, but not least, we also said goodbye to Elaine Schlosser. Elaine was a tireless volunteer, who was always willing to help with a smile. She was very active on the Salmon Run 5k committee, and in recent years, actually ran the entire food service operation for Harbor Hoops. She and her family members could often be seen in Clifford, the Big Red Van, loading and unloading massive quantities of goods for the Salmon Run and Harbor Hoops.
We thank these fine folks for their years of dedication to the Wilson Community Enhancement Charity. Their leadership and countless hours of their time spent in service to their community have been invaluable.
